Our Leadership Team
Karen Brubaker, LCSW, ACHE - Chief Executive Officer
Karen Brubaker is a native of Glynn County and the mother of two children. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Davidson College and a Master of Social Work degree from Florida State University. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
Karen has worked in the Hospice field since 1994. She served as Administrator of United Hospice in Atlanta then was promoted to Regional Director supervising several hospice agencies. Later, as Director of Professional Services, Karen led a hospice consultant team and was responsible for the clinical quality of care of patients at 12 hospices in Georgia and South Carolina.
Karen moved back to our local community in 2000 and continued to work as an independent hospice consultant. In 2006, she became the Quality Assurance Director for Hospice of the Golden Isles and helped open Georgia’s first freestanding hospice residential facility at Hospice of the Golden Isles. Karen was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Hospice of the Golden Isles in 2007. She is the past President of the Georgia Hospice and Palliative Care Organization's Board of Directors (2012-2014) and has served on committees of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
Susan Conway, RN, BSN – Chief Clinical Officer
Susan Conway has worked at HGI in various capacities since the fall of 2015 and brings tremendous clinical and leadership expertise to her position. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Colby Sawyer College in New London, NH in 1987. Susan previously served as Director of Inpatient Services at Avera St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre, South Dakota where she was responsible for the operations of the Med/Surg, Intensive Care, Pediatric, Swing Bed and Kidney Dialysis Units. She also coordinated the Social Services and Case Management Departments.
Susan is married and has two adult children, three dogs, a cat and four ducks. She and her husband, Mark, attend St. Mark's Episcopal Church. An avid reader, she also enjoys to travel and spend time with her family.
Janice Beauchamp – Chief Financial Officer
Janice Beauchamp is the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Hospice of the Golden Isles and joined the organization in 2008. She is a native of Ohio and holds a Bachelor's of Science degree in Biology from Muskingum College, and a Master's of Business Administration with a major in Finance from Wright State University. Janice has an extensive background in finance and business management. Bringing over twenty-five years of experience to HGI, she previously served as CFO for a biotechnology development company, was Vice President of Business Operations, Parmaceutical Division with Battelle Memorial Institute, and was employed with the Charles F. Kettering Foundation Research Laboratory as the Administrative and Grants Manager.
Dr. John Shaner – Chief Medical Officer
Dr. John Shaner is employed as Hospice of the Golden Isles full-time Physician Chief Medical Officer. Double-board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and Internal Medicine, Dr. Shaner brings more than 29 years of experience to the hospice staff. Dr. Shaner is committed to providing comfort and symptom management for the patients and increasing the quality of their lives. This broad-based experience includes 26 years of working directly in nursing homes and senior care centers as their medical director and attending physician.
Dr. Shaner was Board Certified in Geriatrics from 1994-2004 but did not recertify in order to pursue Hospice and Palliative Medicine Boards. He is conversant in the nursing care regulations and how they interface with hospice for optimal care and compliance.
Gail Shiroky, RN, CHPN – Home Team Patient Care Coordinator
Gail Shiroky is a native of Glynn County. She is a graduate of Glynn Academy and received her Nursing Degree from Brunswick College in 1991. Gail earned her Certified Hospice and Palliative Nursing Certificate in December of 2011.
She has been in nursing for over 24 years. This diverse background includes time working in an Intensive Care Unit, in Home Infusion Therapy (PICC Line Certified), as a Special Procedures RN, as a Hematology/Oncology RN and as a Radiation Nurse.
Gail, and her husband Charles, have two daughters and one grandchild. They are active participants in local charity events including Relay for Life, the South Georgia Health System Bridge Run and the Alzheimer's Walk.
Tarsia Palmer, RN, BSN, CHPN - Patient Care Coordinator
Tarsia Palmer joined Hospice of the Golden Isles in 2011. She graduated in 1995 from Brunswick College with a certificate in Practical Nursing, then from Coastal Georgia Community College in 1997 with an Associate Degree in Nursing and then from Georgia Southern University in 2011 with her RN-BSN degree. Tarsia is also a certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse.
Prior to joining the team at Hospice of the Golden Isles, Tarsia spent 9 years as an Emergency Department nurse at Southeast Georgia Health System and Candler/St. Joseph's Health System - Candler Campus in Savannah. She also worked as a nurse at the McIntosh County Youth Detention Center and the McIntosh County School System.
Tarsia is a native of McIntosh County, GA and the proud mother of one daughter. She is also a descendant of the world renowned, authentic McIntosh County Shouters. In her spare time, Tarsia enjoys spending time with her family and friends, shopping, traveling and surfing the internet.
Patty Crosby - Vice President of Development
Patty brings almost 30 years of television news and media experience to the marketing team at HGI. Her goal is to not only raise more awareness about the amazing work of HGI and the service it provides to the community, but to find new ways to help fund this non-profit agency so more people can benefit from its loving support.
Over the years, Patty has won numerous community service awards for her non-profit work which includes serving as the President of the HEAL (Healing Every Autistic Life) Board, Co-Founder and President of PACT (Parents of Autism ADHD/Coming Together), President of the Society of Professional Journalists (Augusta Chapter) and President of AOII Alumni Sorority (Augusta). She has also served on the boards of the Augusta Child Advocacy Center and Lighthorse Learning in Camden County, GA. Patty has volunteered as the Mistress of Ceremonies/Guest Speaker at numerous charity events including JDRF's Miracles in the Moonlight Gala for the past 12 years and HEAL's annual gala for the past 7 years.
Patty is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a Bachelors Degree in Broadcast News. She is the proud mother of two teenage boys, Harry and Tommy. Patty has also rescued several dogs including her latest, Dexter, who is a Puggle. She plans to put him to work for HGI as well as visiting local nursing homes and senior care centers.
Monica Rich, Bereavement Coordinator
Monica Rich joined Hospice of the Golden Isles in 2015 with 26 years of experience in ministry and Social Work. She is a licensed Social Worker who received a B.A. in Sociology from Clemson University and a Masters of Social Work from Carver School of Social Work at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Monica has been a Hospice Social Worker and Bereavement Counselor, a Minister of Pastoral Care in the Methodist Church and a Home Health Social Worker. She began her career as a liaison to families in crisis in ICU and the emergency room in Memphis, TN. Monica and her family lived in Asia for 7 years where she and her husband were project coordinators for Cooperative Baptist Fellowship's humanitarian efforts in Southern Thailand. Monica also served as a project Coordinator for a tornado disaster relief agency in Eagle Pass, TX where she helped families in crisis.
Monica is married to Dr. Jim Rich, a Veterinarian. They have two children in college. Monica enjoys kayaking, hiking, fishing and photography.
Dr. Mike Cordle, Chaplain
Dr. Mike joined Hospice of the Golden Isles in 2014 with nearly a decade experience of hospice chaplaincy. He received his BA in Social Science with minors in Religion, Education and Psychology form Berry College. He received his Master of Divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University and his Doctor of Ministry from the McCormick Theological Seminary at the University of Chicago Theological Complex.
Dr. Mike was a United Methodist pastor for 37 years and an adjunct professor at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University for 18 years. His most recent congregation was St. Mark United Methodist Church in midtown Atlanta where he grew attendance from 25 each Sunday to 800 each Sunday.
The Cordles have four children and three grandchildren. They love all sports, especially UGA and Falcons football. Having vacationed in the Golden Isles for decades, Dr. Mike and his wife decided to take the plunge to live on "island time".
Amy Broderick, Community Relations Coordinator
After a very personal experience with Hospice of the Golden Isles (HGI), Amy found a way to "give back" by joining the board of the Auxiliary of HGI in 2009. In her two years as fundraising chair, the organization raised more than $150,000 for HGI. This was noticed by the CEO of HGI and Amy jokes that she volunteered her way into a full-time position at the hospice. Amy has always been involved in the community and has been on the board of directors for the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce since 2013 and as Vice Chair of the Communications and Special Projects since 2014. Before joining the HGI team, Amy was active on many other non-profit boards including the Brunswick Junior Women's Club (2008 Leadership Award, 2009 Woman of the Year), Coastal Coalition for Children "Taste of the Vine" co-chair (2008,2009), and the Golden Isles Association of Realtors where she chaired various committees and was the Vice President of Communications and Governmental Affairs. She was also a YWCA Tribute to Women Leaders Honoree in 2010.
Amy has a solid 20-year background in sales, marketing and community relations and used these skills to educate the community about the services available with our incomparable non-profit hospice. The seamless coordination of marketing and advertising strategies, community education, and superior clinical team truly distinguishes Hospice of the Golden Isles from the others.
Brad Hummel, Community Relations Coordinator
Brad has served on the marketing team at Hospice of the Golden Isles as a Community Relations Coordinator since 2011. His role includes physician and facilities relations, website management, billboard and television marketing, project management for printed collateral as well as information visits for families. Brad came to Hospice of the Golden Isles with a diversified professional background with more than 22 years experience in areas including community relations, real estate sales and marketing, commercial insurance, resort sales and golf club management.
Brad currently sits on the Board of Directors for the St. Simons Island Food & Spirits Festival, the Glynn County Sports Hall of Fame and the Golden Isles Basketball Association. He is also the Director of Basketball Operations and a coach for the non-profit Golden Isles Basketball Association.
Brad has long-standing family ties to the Golden Isles. His grandfather, B.H. Cody, owned and operated Cody's Restaurant and Western Sizzlin' Steak Houses for several decades. Brad is a graduate of Glynn Academy and Auburn University. He and his wife Kelly have two children.
